The sixth CATCH-EyoU newsletter

The last issue of the CATCH-EyoU newsletter

Dear friends this is the last issue of the CATCH-EyoU newsletter. Our project has come to an end and for our last issue we want to present the activities and the tools the we have produced during the last year of the project. Most of them are already available in our website: we  hope that you will find them interesting and that you will use them to reflect on, promote and support active citizenship of young Europeans.  As most of you know, the project had its final event in Brussels, last September, at the Emilia-Romagna Delegation to the European Union: we are not going to tell you about the Conference, but we will leave the stage to young people, and to other stakeholders, who shared their views on the final event and on the project.

CATCH -EyoU is the acronym of Constructing AcTive CitizensHip with European Youth: Policies, Practices, Challenges and Solutions. The project, funded with 2.498.787,00 € under the H2020 Call “The Young Generation in an Innovative, Inclusive and Sustainable Europe” deals with the strategic challenge “Societal and political engagement of young people and their perspectives on Europe".

CATCH-EyoU deals with democracy

CATCH -EyoU builds on the ideas of passionate scholars of different disciplines (Psychology, Political Science, Sociology, Media and Communications, Education) across EU who decided to work together to ensure the continuation of participatory and representative democracy in EU. We are aware that our goal is very ambitious, and to pursue it we set up a huge research project that will contribute to identify the factors, located at different levels (psychological, developmental, macro social and contextual) influencing the different forms of youth active engagement in Europe.

The Project’s structure

Through different studies, qualitative (WP3, WP5, WP6, WP8), quantitative (WP4, WP7), and an active citizenship intervention in schools (WP9) - see our web site here for a full description of each work package - the project will provide a multifaceted understanding of the different factors influencing the perspectives of young people on Europe and of the ways in which young people engage in society, how they approach public authorities and how they engage materially and symbolically in order to participate in the construction of the societies in which they live. Our approach is multidisciplinary and iterative, as our Pert shows clearly: we start with the theoretical workpackage, inform it with the empirical ones that deal with how Europe is socially constructed in young people’s experience; then we examine youth experiences with different approaches (longitudinal - quantitative, ethnographic - qualitative and participatory- mixed methods) and finally redesign the theory integrating the contributions of the different pieces of research.
